FAQs about hotels in Tokyo

See It to Believe It!

The capital of Japan, Tokyo is a vast, teeming metropolis nestled between mountains and Tokyo Bay. It’s so huge that you’ll have to come to grips with public transport and maybe even experience being pushed onto a train. Yes, it does actually happen!

Get your bearings by ascending the Tokyo World Trade Centre near the waterfront, and savour the fantastic views taking in the red-and-white Tokyo Tower and Shinkuju’s skyscrapers. North is Ueno, home to the best museums (including the Tokyo National Museum) and a large park bursting with cherry blossom in spring.

Equally tranquil are the Chiyoda Imperial Palace and Gardens, surrounded by water. Also in gardens is the Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Shibuya, a youthful district where neon abounds.

For more traditional Japanese culture, head to Asakusa whose Sensō-ji Buddhist temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple. Markets in the grounds sell a variety of wares, though shopping in Tokyo is, of course, fantastic wherever you go.

Whether you stay in a Japanese ryokan, luxury Tokyo hotel or a hostel, don’t fly out of Tokyo Narita Airport or Haneda Airport without having tried sushi. Another Japanese institution is the sento (public bath) and onsen (hot springs bath) – a must try. Also incredibly popular are Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, Asia’s 2 most visited theme parks.

Probably one of the best city to visit on planet earth! Coming here once will make you realise you’re craving for more. Atmosphere, cleanliness, politeness, stunning sights and mind blowing culinary excellence. Every trip always feels like it’s too short to grasp the wonders of Tokyo. Come once, twice and evermore 😀

Tokyo is a fantastic city (or more correctly a collection of several cities). Until you visit Tokyo it is difficult to comprehend the vastness of the place, which some people could find quite daunting. The most important tip I would give is to try and work out how the train and subway systems work as quickly as possible, once you've mastered that the city is your oyster. As well as visiting all the usual temples, parks and museums I would encourage people to go off the beaten track and visit some of the bars and restaurants that the locals frequent. The staff are always friendly and helpful even though they may only have limited English. This applies to almost everyone that we interacted with on our trip. We loved Tokyo and are already planning our next trip there.

Tokyo is the world's largest urban area, so it would take a lifetime to see it all. We spent 4 nights there at the outset of our Japan trip, and one last day and night there. The train system is initially daunting, but it's the best way to get any distance in the city. The signage and announcements are in Japanese and English, and we always managed to find someone to help with directions in the labyrinthine station. Otherwise we walked miles and miles and occasionally took an Uber. Stayed away from major tourist attractions. Each district has its own character and offerings. Personally, I hated the intense crowds in Shibuya and Shinjuku. The Ueno district isn't glamorous, but it's less frenzied and also happens to have a large Indian community that serves up some delicious curry. Walk a block off the busy thoroughfares, and you're immediately in neighborhoods of narrow streets and alleys where some of the old wooden houses still remain. Almost everyone has a tiny doorstep garden, and there are green spaces like parks and temple grounds in the middle of the city. A wonderful old neighborhood to stroll is Nezu, near Ueno Park.

The public transit system was clean and efficient, but could confuse travelers if they do not use an app like Google Maps to navigate. Be sure to have a good phone and an auxiliary battery for long excursions. It was helpful to have a data plan or purchase a sim card to fill in between locations with free wifi.

Our second time here and explored east Tokyo and parts of Ginza. Visited Tokyo tower at night (a must!) and Tokyo station. A lovely city with a blend of old and new. Lots of places to explore; better if undiscovered by tourists. Sure, do the touristy things the first time but explore the next time. Can’t wait to go back.

This was our first experience of Tokyo hotels, and the mind boggled at how such a tiny room could be so cleverly laid out. It has everything you need, and we only noticed the lack of space when we both tried to move around at the same time (spoiler: doesn't work). The price was excellent (for Tokyo) without feeling "budget" in quality. Asakusa doesn't have the buzz of Ueno or Shinjuku, but it has its own restaurant district and both Tokyo Skytree and Senso-ji are within an easy walk.

Great alternative to a hotel as it was spacious and had all the amenities perfect for a family, especially a kitchen and washing machine. Yoyogi station was a much easier station to navigate than Shibuya / Shinjuku, and the accomodation was located within easy walking distance, with a nearby supermarket and convenience store. Only thing to be aware of is the stairs, so if elderly or low in mobility, this may be an issue. Check in instructions were clear, and communication was prompt.

Our planned hotel canceled our reservation the night before our arrival date, so the Hotel Rose Garden was a last minute booking. We had two choices for Shinjuku hotels on such short notice, and we thought the novelty of bunk beds for my husband and I would be fun. The location of the hotel is probably the best part of it, as it's only one metro stop away from the main Shinjuku area, but it feels like a world away with how quiet the actual area is. The staff was also very helpful.

This is a beautiful hotel close to Ginza and close to the Tsujiki outer market. The room design is beautiful. My husband and I had a smaller room which was a bit tight and our kids had a bigger room that was decent size, had a wooden tub in addition to the shower, etc. The cherry on top at this hotel though is the private bath that you can reserve for a fee. Tokyo is a busy place, and to be able to go in to a serene onsen-like bath in the evening was awesome.

Akasaka is a brilliant place to stay. Beautiful little area of Tokyo that has a convenient subway station down the street and fantastic restaurants and bars etc. We liked that it had everything we needed but it was quieter but with great access to the nearby hotshots of Shibuya and Shinjuku. This hotel is modern and clean and the staff were lovely. Loved the pyjama's and it was well priced in comparison to other similar hotels in Japan. We would stay again.

This accommodation was a real bang for a buck! The host was nice and welcoming, responding to messages very quickly. The location was convenient and close to the main attractions of Shinjuku as well as the Shinjuku station. For the price, the room was a decent size (fitting all five of us) and had more facilities provided than in most hotels many times the cost. I will definitely consider booking again when I'm in Tokyo next time.

We loved the amenities, it had a lot more than usual hotels had which made our stay comfortable. My husband was working a few days with meetings and the room was spacious and quiet enough to do so. The staff was great, they noticed our lock was out of batteries, had came right away to replace the battery.

APA hotels are everywhere in Japan. You know what you will be getting. They're clean, comfortable and affordable. This was a perfect example of that. If, however, you are expecting American sized rooms - you need to actually do some research on Japanese accommodation. It's not going to happen. Capsule hotels exist for a reason... Tokyo does not have affordable and spacious hotel rooms.

Fantastic and helpful staff, located in a calmer area of Tokyo away from the typical tourist destinations of Shibuya and Shinjuku. There is a subway station right next to the hotel though which makes getting around fairly convenient if a little long to get to downtown. Next to a popular shopping area that has some great inexpensive restaurants that locals seem to frequent.
