Renata was fantastic, along with her fresh baked goods. It was very clean and newly renovated. There were no restaurants open during the week, but Renata made certain I did not go hungry.

The masseria is only a mile or two outside of Carovilli, on the slopes of Monte Pizzi. Carovilli itself is a quiet village built around the foot of Monte Ferrante, a low hill with an ancient Samnite settlement - a short, steep walk up from the village through lovely pine woods. The village has a couple of trattoria (eg. Adriano) but the food at the masseria is so good that we chose to eat there most of the time. There is a small car park on via Napoli - from there you just walk - driving is pointless. Next door is Castiglione di Carovilli - a smaller village overlooked by a delightful ruined church on a rock outcrop. You can access the tiny campanile and the views are really worthwhile.
