A beautiful region, with excellent restaurants. The Grootrivier and (Western Cape part of) the Bloukrans River passes are exceptional, as is Nature's Valley. The Birds of Eden is THE world leading bird conservancy -- the biggest anywhere with free flying birds in a magnificent forest with a beautiful kloof, waterfall ,,, The nearby Monkeyland and Jukani conservancies are also probably the best in Africa. Thyme & Again restaurant is also a favourite.

This is definitely not a family holiday spot! It could, at best, be a backpackers lodge. The water in the bathrooms was brownish, and although there were assurances that it was healthy, we were sceptical. The rooms were tiny and barely furnished. The kitchen is communal and almost 100 meters away from the rooms - very inconvenient for those rainy days! What about the toilet and bathroom outside the rooms! Its a wonderful place to stay, especially since it is 18kms from Plettenberg Bay, so its more serene than Plett over the height of summer. There is a lot to do in the vicinity. We loved our visits to the elephant sanctuary (an absolute must-do), the wolf sanctuary, Birds of Eden, Tenikwa (wildlife rehabilitation), Jukani (wildlife sanctuary, especially for Big Cats) and Monkeyland. There's a super water park (Adventureland) about 19kms away, with fabulous waterslides. We made the mistake of not booking restaurants for dinner in advance. Over late December / early January most places were fully booked, which really limited our options and we spent a lot of time calling around, which we could have avoided. I would scout the restaurants and book well in advance next time.

The owners are beyond accommodating and so friendly, nothing was too much trouble. My favourite quirk was that a lot of the fittings in the place were recycled goods which have cleverly been used. We also loved that there was a separate bin for food and recycling, very eco-conscious which is excellent. The perfect place to sit by the fire drinking wine in the winter overlooking the forest. The rooms are set looking at the lily ponds which are beautiful but be prepared as it is a little remote and if you want to go out for dinner in the evening it’s quiet a drive back in the dark. The breakfast was very good, just would have liked it not to have been so rushed, the breakfast staff were lovely but they were bringing the cooked food before you finish the fruit and yoghurt.
