The private onsen was the best part of the trip. It is on the deck and you can literally spend hours soaking in the nature. In addition, the staff was beyond lovely and were extremely helpful. They even offered to draw me a map of the different walking routes. The food was also amazing at the restaurant. The chicken and pork were good as well as the hida beef. Room is very spacious. It is traditional Japanese so there is no standup shower but does how the stuff for a good onsen soak.

Superb location in historic center! Great price, simple, clean with access to breakfast. You are greeted and assisted by the former owner who now manages the property. She is kind and solicitous of her guests’ needs and goes the extra mile to ensure their comfort. The walk up is a bit steep but we are 3 women in our 70s and managed.
There are two onsens for guests. The one for women is bright and cheerful.

It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!!
I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

We highly recommend a visit.
We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials.
There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well.
This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.
We absolutely love our stay at the ryokan Oyado Yamakyu.
Everything was perfect, the ryokan is really cute with a retro vibes really on point with the overall ambiance in Takayama.
The staff was also really kind and helpfull.
The room was really big and confortable. The bathroom are shared but we had a with a private toilet and a sink in the room.
The cherry on top was the dinner and breakfast, they where amazing with a beautiful variety of local food and a lot of it! One of our best meal during our one month trip in Japan.
The room is clean, big and quiet. Staff is friendly. Complimentary bicycles usage available on the first come first serve basis. Hot public bath facility available in this hotel. Japanese restaurants all nearby. Takamaya Train Station and the Bus Terminal is less than 100m away. Very convenient.
Our 2 days stay in Takamaya is fruitful. Manage to visit the UNESCO Shirakawa village, Sanmachi Historical Preserved Edo-Period Houses and hop into a traditional Ryokan 1 night stay in the mountainous region on public transport.
Takayama Ouan is the best hotel I've stayed in Japan. The place is beautiful and styled as a traditional hotel. Except for the reception you walk barefoot on clean and soft carpets in all the hotel. The rooms were much larger than average. From the open air SPA on the last floor you can gaze on Takayama mountain range. The breakfast was varied and top class and the evening there was free serving of handmade ramen.
It is impossible for me to find even the slightest defect.
Absolutely endearing staff who add a lot of charm to this establishment. This ryokan is remote and that is the point, right there in the middle of the mountains. Original Edo structure of an old house, with well designed extentions and typical ryokan rooms. I love it! Delicious japanese breakfast in private rooms. Next time we will try the Kaiseki. Beautifull onsen which however, has no view over the river nearby.
This hotel’s location was an 8 minute walk from the train station. The major sites were a 15-30 minute walk from the hotel, with center city, and the major restaurants, 15 minutes away. It was a very nice choice in Takayama. A good breakfast was served in a dining area on the second floor. There was a lovely onsen available free to guests on the top floor. The staff was delightful and very helpful.
Rooftop onsen was definitely the highlight of the stay here. The view there is great especially when it is snowing.
Also, room having it's own onsen with the same view as the rooftop onsen is the cherry on top. Food was good and you'll like this place if you prefer a more hotel like experience than a ryokan one. Location is good if you are visiting Shinhotaka.
Traditional ryokan with great attention. The staff was extremely friendly and provided an excellent service. The breakfast and specially the dinner was fantastic, the best meal by far we had in Japan.
The onsen of the hotel is small but very nice. Access to the onsen of the Alpina hotel is provided as well, which is bigger and having nice views of the city.
Beautiful, luxurious ryokan with good food and extremely friendly staff. We felt very well taken care of. The ryokan is a bit outside the centre of Takayama, but with the shuttle bus that is no problem at all. We loved our room with our own onsen tub on the balcony - it was quite special soaking there at night, looking out into the Japanese Alps.
Very nice design, woody and modern reinterpretation of a Japanese traditional house or ryokan. Full amenities are provided in the room, which was more spacious than average hotels in touristy towns. Hot bath available and woody smell all along. Lobby is spacious and can be used as a work space. Kind and helpful staff. And it smells like wood.
Clean n spacious room. In room onsen. Tatami floor bed comfortable, maybe pillow a bit hard. Strictly 3 pm check in n easy checking in. Family run ryokan n boss n staff very friendly. Delicious breakfast Kaiseki style. Order their dinner too n it was superb. Better book the dinner at hotel as there is not much around.
This hotel is 2 mins walk from the train station and was a great place to stay for our short stop in Takayama. The hotel is modern and in good condition - the rooms have electric heating, comfy beds, TV, a little kitchen and a washing machine/dryer. We liked the decor of the room. Would definitely stay again!
Small hotel located between Sirakawa-gi and Takayama. Have parking space, friendly staff, and free coffee.
Hotel has no eating facilities, so the list of eatery nearby is provided. We went to a sushi and a coffee shop, they are very friendly, food also is delicious.
Clean and cosy room, comfortable bed.
Amazing outside bath with great privacy and comfort. We have been to many ryokan and onsen hotels but this experience beat them all due to the secluded nature and overall comfort of the location. The genkan was beautiful and at times we would catch passers by looking into the accommodation.
The hotel has everything you need for a confortable and ncie stay in Takayama. It is very close to the JR station (like 5min walk) and the city centre. The room was a bit bigger that the "japanease standard". The onsen was also really nice. The cost/quality ratio is very very high!
I loved this ryokan! It provides you a really Japanese experience. The staffs are amazing, and everything is clean! The best value for money. They also have a Irori / fire room where you can book your make your own bbq . I highly recommend using it.
Location - a minute walk from Takayama Nohi Bus station and a few minutes from old town. Free coffee. Comfortable bed. Spacious room and bathroom. Helpful hotel staff. Very comfortable one piece pajama/spa dress.
It is a very nice Ryokan just in the hearth of Takayama. Super specious for the Japanese standards.
The host was very friendly and helpful.
There is a shared kitchen and a small, but very beautiful garden.
Excellent ryokan with private onsen in the room. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Food was delicious and really well prepared. A truly enjoyable experience to stay a night or two here.
Excellent stay in Takayama in Ryokan style. Everything is good from staff greeting, check in, facilities until check out. Will definitely come back again next time.
