From £97 per nightI have stayed at the Portal for over thirty years when I go on fishing trips to the eastern Sierra. Lata, the owner, is warm and friendly. The motel is conveniently located, fairly affordable, and offers great views of Mt. Whitney from the parking lot. There is a small refrigerator in the room to keep my beer cold and a small freezer part in the refrigerator to freeze my trout before the long trip back home through the desert. There is a little coffee pot in the room, with coffee, which is something I don't find in the Las Vegas hotels.

The apartment was wonderfully furnished, the kitchen and bathroom perfectly equipped, everything was absolutely clean - and the interaction with staff was delightful. I only stopped in the Juniper Springs on the way from A to B, but it was the perfect place for a break.

We drove in and the place was beautiful! I liked how close to nature we were - in fact the staff told us there were bear sightings on the day we arrived. We unfortunately (or fortunately) didn't get to be face to face with a bear, but even if we did, the staff gave us tips to keep safe. We came on a moonless, clear night and saw the milky way! Absolutely amazing. I wish we also stayed a few days longer so we could kayak in the lake right in front of the house.

The property was well maintained, clean, and conveniently located. The bed was comfortable. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We forgot our jacket in the room and they helped mail it to us later. The location was also good. We arrived in the late afternoon and went out to enjoy a quick evening drive along the June Lake Loop (CA-158) at sunset. Such a fantastic view and shade of sky!
